can't boot into safe mode : nt authority shutdown : lsass.exe

I can't boot into safe mode now. I get an error message saying NT Authority
has terminated lsass.exe; code -1073741818 and the computer shuts down;
looping infinitely.

I have read about FxSasser. I have been working on this for days. Let me
expound:

First I was only trying to install an HP 2110 psc. When loading the
software, it said a previous version was already running, remove first then
try again (to paraphrase). All attempts were exhausted. Including the
latest software from HP, and the uninstall utility from HP.

I ran Norton liveupdate then scanned; no virus found.

While on the phone with HP, they determined there was some issue with the
windows installer. They had me check the system with, sfc /scannow. That
finished with no message and took a while.

Then we tried, msiexec /unregister, then reboot, then msiexec /regserver.
Still gave and error when trying to install the printer.

So, we deduce it's a window's issue. I tried to do an windows update. The
only download needed was xp sp2. This failed. In fact, the installation
history shows numerous failed along with a few that succeded; 300 or so items
in list most say failed.

I then found sp2 and downloaded it to the hd. During the backup process of
installing sp2, it failed to find certain files:

msvbvm60.dll:
Had to attrib -h -a -r -s to see it on cmd line. But still didn't like it.
Copied file from another win2k unit. Before replacing, tried to move and
backup to another location; this returned a crc error so I deleted it and
replace with win2k copy.

dllcache folder:
Had to attrib -h -a -r -s to see it.

uploadm.exe:
Had to attrib -h -a -r -s then del it. Replaced w/ win2k copy.

wstcodec.inf:
Pasted from win2k copy.

wmfsdk.inf:
Error message just said it couldn't find it and didn't give me a chance to
show it a good copy. So after sp2 finished happily, I pasted from win2k copy
to correct location.

Closed all open and rebooted manually.

Upon restart, i get the above error which loops infinitely.

I tried to make an xp boot cd from a boot floppy and Nero bootdisk function,
adding fxsasser fix from symantec. This only started an install; didn't give
me a chance to boot to safe mode or desktop.

Now what?

"pasted from win2k copy to correct location."

Why would you think win2k had the correct version of lsass.dll?
