Can't boot from the CD

C

Colonel Blip

Hello, All!

This is not an XP question, but maybe some of the experts here can help. My
setup uses an ASUS A7V8X m/b. I can set the bios for what appears to enable
but it doesn't. My bios allows me to set a CD as a SCSI/ATA drive (this one
is an IDE, i.e. ATA therefore) and elevate it to the initial boot position.
BUT, it is ignored. My system is a dual boot XP Pro/W2K but the problem
occurs on both; I'm wondering if there are some config.sys, autoexec.bat
things needed but I don't see why since thought this was all at the hardware
level.

Thanks.

Colonel Blip.

Look for the keystroke (if necessary) at POST to force boot from CD-Rom
drive or check your mobo/pc manual for instructions.

Usually, when the PC is botting the CD, you should be seeing "Press any key
to boot CD....". It may be that this message is display too fast. Check to
see if the BIOS is telling the P.O.S.T. screen to start in "quick mode" or
regular/std/slow mode.

I never get this message, but as soon as I send this note I will go back and
look for a POST quick mode setting. Sounds vaguely familiar.

Thanks.

in addition to the excellent suggestions above, do you have a computer with
more than one CD-ROM (cd-rom/dvd/cd-writer)

In BIOS, hit enter on the cd-rom in boot order and it will allow you to
choose which cd-rom to boot from. I've seen this on several motherboards and
pretty sure this is an option on yours

Thanks to all with advice on this one. Got it working. Problem was my CD and
DVD were both on an IDE add in card. I had to rearrange some drives and get
the CD on the on-board IDE and then was able to get a boot.

Thanks again.

i too had a similar problem trying to boot from the cd drive with this
motherboard........

what i did was to DISABLE all the other boot devices rather than just select
the CD drive, this worked for me.

DISABLE 3 1/2 generic floppy and all hard drives.

Good Luck

DB :)
