Can't boot after serv pk 1 install

I installed service pack 1 update and now when I try to boot up the system
goes into a loop where it boots half way up and starts over. When I try to
boot in safe mode, it gets down to agp440 and hangs or loops again. How can
I fix this without reformating my hard drive?

Next time you upgrade your OS disable your 39 background apps as
recommended.

Bill,

Did you try Last Known Good Configuration (?):

Start/Restart your computer and start pushing F8 key twice per second.
Select Last Known Good Configuration on Windows Advanced Options screen, and push Enter.
