Ahh BigK,
Got your back-
Got it down to a science now(thanks for the info-btw)

Kerry,
Have an HP on a XP Home; and I get to it from Vista easy now; after BigK
showed me how.
Do this,
In Vista,
Control panel>printer>add printer- lpt-pick your printer driver-the
networked one-install driver
after you see the printer in vista
right click on it>properties>add new port>local port
type in \\computer\name
Bingo-networked printer

I posted this method in a few threads a while ago. One is the thread titled
"Still Cannot Add Network Printer - Access Denied" in
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan. I tried to find the other
threads about the subject to update them but I guess I missed this one. It's
a common method to get a printer working when you're having networking
problems. It works in most versions of Windows all the way back to win95. I
hardly ever use XP Home so I had to setup a VPC image with XP Home to test
it and make sure it worked with Home and Vista. By the time I did this all
the threads on the subject were pretty old.

The solution for the printer problem was solved for me by HP support.

From the remote VISTA computer, mine a notebook connecting with the XP
desktop, in the control panel PRINTERS:

a) Click Start and then Printers and Faxes in Windows XP.
b) Right-click the printer icon for the All-in-One product and select
Sharing on the menu. The Properties will appear with the Sharing tab on top.
c) Click the option to share the printer, and then enter a unique name for
the printer in the Share Name field. Write this name down exactly as it is
entered because it will be required to set up the remote computers. Click OK
to finish the setup.
Perform the following steps on the Vista computer.
a) Click the Start () icon, click Control Panel, and then click Printers.
Launch the "Add a Printer" wizard
b) Choose "Add a local printer"
c) Select "Create a new port" radio button and choose "Local Port" from the
drop down menu.
d) Press Next
e) In the "Enter Port Name:" box enter the following: \\Desktop\Printer
where "Desktop" = the computer name of XP computer and "Printer" = the
printer
share name.
f) Select the Printer driver from the list provided or use the "Have Disk"
button to install the correct Vista driver if it is not in the built-in list.
It is critical that the driver you use is Vista compatible.
g) Press next
h) Give the printer a distinct name and choose whether to set as the default.
i) Press Next

This worked flawlessly for me,
Ken

Ken -

I followed your solution and it looked like it was going to work, but I'm
getting a "Can't communicate with Printer" error message when I try to print
a test page. Any insight is appreciated! I'm using the same workgroup name
and both firewalls are turned off.

Thanks!
