Can't access one client in XP p2p workgroup

T

Tom C.

This is a p2p workgroup, all clients are WinXP pro, firewalls are all off
for troubleshooting purposes. The root of each C: drive is shared using
simple file sharing and maximum access (level 5 I think MS calls it, but you
wouldn't know that unless you read the KB articles about this stuff).
Anyways, I can browse and have full access between clients 2&3, and from
client 1 I can browse and have full access to clients 2&3, BUT clients 2&3
cannot access client 1. Now, here's what I mean by "can't access": Client 1
appears in the browse list by its proper netbios name, but when you click on
it to expand it and look for shared resources, you get the error message:
"\\client1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. Access is denied."

You can't even see the standard shares that XP automatically enables, like
printers and such. The appearance in the browse list is all you get for
client 1. HOWEVER, if I do \\run\client1sharename from the Start, RUN
dialog, I can get to the share contents. I have checked to make sure that
NetBios over TCP is enabled on all clients and that the Computer Browser
service is running and that's set up the way it should be. So, any ideas on
why I can't network browse client 1? Thanks!

Oops! In the last paragraph, make that \\client1\client1sharename, NOT
\\run\client1sharename.

Found my answer in another thread. Thanks to Chuck (MVP) for pointing me to
the restrictanonymous registry setting. That was the problem!

Hi Tom This won't help you but I have a similar problem. My network was
working fine but all of a sudden it stopped. I have 2 computers hooked up
thru a wireless router and each computer can ping the other and each computer
can get out to the web but I can't get the computers to see each other or the
contents of each other. All my drives are marked to share and up until
about a week ago, they were sharing fine. i'm not sure what has happened in
the mean time. When I bring my laptop to work, I have a similar problem so
I think the problem is within my laptop and not with my home or work pc. I
hope someone can help with your problem and mine.
