Can't access my documents

I have just upgraded my computer with a new motherboard,
hard drive, memory etc and stupidly forgot to transfer my
documents contents.I installed xp on the new hard drive,
cause it would not load from the old operating system,
because of the new motherboard.I figured that i would be
able to transfer all the files that i needed from my old
operating system(hard drive), but i set my documents to
not be shared with other users,and i can't open the old
my documents folder, i've tried to change it from read
only, it won't copy to the new hard drive. Can anyone
help because it has family pictures from christmas, and i
can't get them?
