CanoScan 8400F on XP with PS CS2 error code 2,178,0

Might someone be able to help me with my scanner under Photoshop.

I have used the CanoScan 8400F on XP Pro with Photoshop and also with
the 'native' Canon software. The latter I mostly use to create PDF from
scans. Under Photoshop, I have used it to scan prints as well as colour
negatives. All worked very well until recently.

While the scanner still works fine with the Canon software, under
Photoshop I now get the advice that it will close the interface -
reporting an error Code 2,178,0. Reasons are not very helpful and
include -> Original may not be set correctly, -> Protective Sheet not
in place, -> Lamp not warmed up. But this after it works with the Canon
software, ie must be warm for instance.

I am not sure what the commas in the code mean, ie is it a list of
three codes or not. But have no idea what the problem is. Since the
scanner works with the supplied software, I assumed that a reinstall of
Photoshop might solve the problem. So I unregistered and then
uninstallend and reinstalled CS2.

This did not fix my problem. I am not aware of anything that I did that
might have changed my installation; that is I neither changed, added or
deleted software nor hardware around the time the problem commenced.

Has anyone had similar problems on a similar setup? Your input would be
greatly appreciated.

Try reading this. It's for the 9950F scanner, but it might offer
some help.
