Canon MP830, Printserver and Linux

Hi all,

i'm thinking about buying a new multifunctional device with fax, print and
scan. At the moment my favorite is the Canon MP830, but i have some
questions about it.

My old printer is a HP 970 CXi and its connected to a dsl-router with
USB-printserver (Netgear FWG114P). The printer ca be reached from my whole
(little) network with XP and also with some Linux-Derivates (SUSE,
DamnSmallLinux, Ubuntu). Naturally the HP-Tools (like Ink-Level) doesnt
work.

So how it is with the Canon? Will it work at such a printserver? And not
only as a printer, but also as a scanner? Or should i have to connect it
directly to a computer and than share it about SMB?

And how is it with Linux? I believe that the MP830 is too new for direct
support in Linux, but maybe there is a similar Canon driver (only for
printing, in Linux i dont need the Scanner-Part)?

Thanks for all answers,

regards, Jens

There was a project to adapt the older series, the mp750/mp760/mp780 to
linux.

But sadly the mp800 is listed as "unknown".

Canon offers something resembling linux drivers, but as the ip5200
wasn't sold in japan they don't have this one listed. I can't remember
if the mp800/830 is based on the ip4200 or the ip5200, so it's hard to
say whether any of these would work.

However. there is always turboprint, it costs $30 euros.

if you prefer Deutch)
The mp830 is listed.

I can not answer your question on the print server, only that canon
offers the mp800R which supports wifi IIRC, but no fax. Sadly there is
no mp830R.

You might find more info on http://www.druckerchannel.de/ which is
unfortunatly (for me) Deutch only.

This is prefered when dealing with scanners. There was a wifi USB hub
that might do the trick as far as sharing a AIO but, this is a big but,
i don't know when there will be scanner support for anything beyond the
mp500.
