has anyone done a comparison of the canon ipf5000 vs. the epson 4800?
i'm interested only in the quality of the prints, not the longevity
but comments on user friendliness will also be appreciated ...

If your looking for professional results avoid Canon. Epsons are
generally better than Canon in print quality.

the canon ip5000 is very good. the wide format i9900/ip9500 is better

We are talking the wide format printers here Measekete... iPF5000.
It's not the ip5000, and wider than the i9900. There is no ip9500, but
you likely mean the Pixma pro9500 which you have not even met yet.
This is not your $150 desktop printer. This is not even your $500 a3
printer. This is your $2000 a2 printer.

I know you get excited when people start talking canons, but please,
don't mislead people who are attempting to get useful opinions on
products.

1. You've not even met the Pixma pro9550
2. You've never heard of the iPF5000, let alone the imagePROGRAF (iPF)
series
3. Wide format printers are outside your experence range.

i'm familiar with the reviews but was hoping for either a formal
comparison or at least a comparison by a pro/semi-pro who has printed
the same pix with both printers ... for example i've read that canon
likes its users to use the canon software instead of photoshop ....
and was wondering what a photoshop pro thinks of this ...

as to promotions :) ... there's a lot of things that go into
promotions :) ...

you may find that review more detailed (and more favourable to the iPF5000).
There are indeed some user-friendliness (lack of) issues identified.
There isn't a conclusive ("a is better than b") answer on output
quality. Gamut with 12 inks is greater, as you would expect. Dmax
better - which is probably more significant than overall gamut, as the 8
colour pigment inkjets exceed the gamut of wet-process printing, but
fail (including in comparison to dye inkjets) in depth of blacks, so an
improvement there is is noted.
There is a PS plugin to allow 16 bit output to the printer.

thanks ... that's certainly a start :) ... hadn't heard about the 16
bit output plugin ... wonder if it would work with the epson :) ...
