Canon i9100 banding; my experience

...... let me join 'the club' as well..... :)

My 18 month old s9000 has just annoyingly started doing this... I take
a lot of bird/wildlife pics and lots of my backgrounds greeny/brown
are now starting to band.

I took off the printhead - cleaned it - put in 100% all new cartridges
- re-aligned the print head - downloaded the latest printer driver and
.......

guess what....... ????

...... not one bit of difference !

Luckily i've also got a Canon s950 that still prints OK for up to
8x10's BUT
for large prints i just can't rely on the s9000 any more. Sometimes it
starts off great but then about 1/3 or 1/2 of the page - it starts
again. This sounds like an air leak or something but surely not with
new cartridges - I even took those out of my s950 and put them in the
s9000 - no change...

How much is a new printhead (UK) - if its too much I'll junk it and go
back to Epson again.....

It sounds like a print head. They eventually wear out. The nice thing
about the Canon S9000 is that it is child's play to replace, but you
probably know that.

I wore one out while still in warranty, so my first replacement was free. I
am sure about a year or so from now I'll wear out this one. We put a LOT of
paper through ours printing proof sheets for three wedding photographers.

If you are concerned about printheads in general, you are NOT going to be
happy with Epson. They go out too, but it is a MUCH bigger deal to replace
them.

That said, we have an Epson 4000 on order... but it is for some specific
jobs and we will just amortize the high maintenance we expect to have with
the Epson into the cost of the jobs.

The printhead is could not be my problem because the printer is brand new!
Canon asked me to email them one of the images and they will print it using
the same settings/printer and will respond. As soon as I hear I shall post
so everyone can benefit ... Let's hope they actually find a solution!

Someone mentioned in a previous post that the motor advancing the paper
might be the problem and that would not surprise me at all because the paper
is not moving smoothly in just about the area where the banding occurs.

Tom....

how do you actually know for certain when the printhead is gone....

Mine still prints the nozzle-jet test page 100%...

Only when I start printing 'for real' does the problem show up -
sometimes I can do a couple of 7x5's before it emerges again....
surely if the head has gone - its GONE - it won't work on 1 or all
colours ????

One thought: on my S9000 there are two printing speeds - a 'Quiet mode'
and a 'normal mode' - the quiet being slower and giving less vibration.

If this option is available on the 9100, then is there a difference in
banding between the two modes?

The option is there I have tried both quiet and normal mode with no
improvement the banding unfortunately is the same!
Still waiting to hear from Canon. I called today and was told that someone
will print the image I sent using one of their printers and call me in a
few days. I was also told that most likely the sample images I sent back
with the printer ... were tossed because that department does not share info
with tech support!
I will post here when I and if I get a call from Canon!
