canon i860 clogged head

I realize that I probably sound a little stupid posting this, but I just
wanted people to remember about using all their ink cartridges on a
regular basis.

I have an i860 and an i9900. My i860 head clogged up. It was the photo
black that clogged. I had no idea why at the time. I replaced the head.
A year later the same thing happened. This time I went to this newsgroup
and found that I was not printing photos enough. I was basically not
using this cartridge for months at a time. They clog up when you do
this. I know I know, I should have known better, I just didn't.

Now I print documents and pictures regularly on both printers whether I
need a photo printed out or not.

I noticed that my photo cyan cartridges go empty at triple the rate of
the rest of my ink carts. I print a lot pictures with blue sky for my
wife. That sure does it.

If you use OEM Canon ink all of the time you should not have any problem printing even once a month.

Your probably better off with a HP printer...better print quality and
less prone to clogging.

Considering the price of Canon ink cartridges,
I am money ahead replacing heads. Now I might replace less heads because
I know what wrecks them.
Canon wants 11 bucks per cartridge and generics are 1.50.
Canon and other printer manufacturers are clearly awash in bucks from
selling ink. The markup must be astronomical.

Somebody will eventually make a printer that will sell for the real
price of the printer, and not on the basis of making a fortune from ink.
That printer will sell like hotcakes.

I for one am perfectly willing to pay the real price for a printer.

I do a lot of photo printing because my wife is into photography and is
winning prizes using 1.50 ink.

Can you think of reason why I would want to pay 7 times as much for ink?
I just bought 200 bucks worth of 1.50 ink cartridges. Like I said, we do
a lot of printing. Do you really really think I should have paid 1400
dollars. PLEASE get real.

Canon, HP, Epson, and others have found a gold mine selling ink as if it
was worth its weight in gold. These manufacturers do everything they can
to keep users from using generic ink. For the person who does not print
much, using Canon ink might work for them. Printing 30 or 40 13X17 photo
prints is simply too expensive.

You might just as well forget the printer and get it done on line from a
professional printing house.

Canon and others seem to have the mission to make digital photography
more expensive to do than film.

My problem Hendo is that I cannot go out and buy an HP printer without
expecting to pay for ink as if it were worth its weight in gold. As far
as I know there are no generic ink supplies for HP printers. If I am
wrong about this, please let me know of a source. I would quit using
Canon like a bad habit.

That is a bunch of crap.  I have had a Canon IP4000 for over 4 years.  Yes of course I use Canon ink only.  I never did a cleaning cycle and never had a clog.  I use the printer at least every couple of weeks.  I also have an HP printer.

Here is the real comparison.


For text ( especially draft mode ) the HP results in better quality.

For paper handling the Canon is far superior.

For ink economy the Canon wins.

For photo results there is no comparison.  Canon wins hands down.

While I am glad I have two printers if I was to choose just one printer today I would choose a Canon IP4500.  AND I would only use Canon ink.

You bought a printer to get great long lasting results. If you print
photos this is very important. The crap ink produces crap photos and

Kodak thinks they do but it is not as good as Canon, sells only with a
scanner, is not all that economical and is not selling like hotcakes.

use Epson ink.

Yes it is. And if you want to accept the crap quality that has a higher
risk of fading that is your choice. But all a spade a spade. The
quality is nowhere near as good.

You might just as well forget the printer and get it done on line from
a professional printing house.

Go to costco.

Then go get a Nikon F6 and use your favorite film.

making too much money. So is Nikon. Find some chinese crap. I think
they make a seagull that uses 35mm film.

I have photos hanging on our walls that are 4 1/5 years old. They were
made using what you describe as "crap" ink. They still look gorgeous. My
wife just won two first prizes for her "crap" photos. Those blue ribbons
