Canon FS2710 problem

When I bought my Canon FS2710 scanner a few years ago I was using a
computer with a Duron 800 processor and 512 MB of memory and running
Windows Millennium. It installed and worked without any problem.

Then I changed to Windows XP Pro on the same computer and found that the
scanner wouldn't instal because it wasn't supported by that version of
Windows. However, a lot of hunting brought the solution- a special
driver downloaded from the Adaptec site and a later version of the
driver from Canon.

Recently that old machine died and I replaced it with a Compaq Presario
with an Athlon 64 bit processor and with Windows XP Home installed on
it. Now I can't instal the scanner. I've been back to the Adaptec and
Canon sites. The same info and downloads are to be found there but they
will not work on this machine.

I see two possibilities. 1- those files would work with XP Pro but not
XP Home. 2- Possibly the 64 bit processor is the problem.

Has anyone out there encountered this problem? The sales person has
advised against changing to XP Pro as the recovery program supplied with
the computer will not work. Apparently this could affect the warranty
from Compaq. Alternatively I suppose I could try to repare the old
machine, (it probably needs a new motherboard of an obsolete type), and
use it for scanning and then transfer the files to the new machine.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Software written for XP Pro will also work for XP Home.
Most likely the problem is the 64 bit computer. You have to tell the
software that it is a 64 bit machine.

Most of the software is written for 32 bit computer. In enough time there
will be 64 bit drivers and applications.

Search for drivers and applications that work in 64 bit.

Read Installation Instructions for installing ASPI on 64 bit computer.

There is not a Canon FS2710 driver for Windows XP, but you may be able to
get the Windows 2000 driver to work.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to download ASPI drivers from Adaptec.
I followed the instruction to run the driver from the batch file with
XP64 as a switch. However, it seems to ignore the switch and load for a
32 bit processor.

Well, back to the drawing board.
