Cannot work with 4GB Sony Microvault 2.0 Flash USB drive

Hi,

I have a thinkpad T42 with WinXP Professional (SP2). My USB mouse works
fine with my usb ports. So do my usb broadband connections and my
camera USB module.

But when I try to insert my Sony USb Flash drive, the system detects it
as "USB2.0" and says it cannot find drivers to install. And hence this
appears as a yellow question mark in my device drivers.

The same drive works well with other think pads (t42) in my office. Is
there something wrong with my system ?

I tried uninstalling the existing drivers and restarting the system.
Now, the system delects only the USB hub and no USB controllers. What
couls I possibly do to rectify this ?

You can try rt clicking MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device
Manager>USB Controllers. rt click on each one
and choose Uninstall. If you have already done this first remove all your
USB devices and then restart and try the procedure
again. THEN hook up the USB Devices.

Have you checked at Sony's Support? Sometime they will have a Knowledge Base
and a list of faq and problems

I tried doing This. All my USB devices were undetected initially.
Everything else finally got back on except the Flash drive (Which works
on another t42 !)

Is there any other method of detecting this.

Another thing that I noticed was that there is an entry under USB
controllers in the device manager (in the other t42 that I attached the
drive to).

This entry does not appear on my PC under the same heading in the
device manager. Instead, I see a conflicted entry (The yellow question
mark with exclamation). It is called USB mass storage device.

I checked whether usbstor.sys was there in the drivers directory. And
it is available there.

I tried updating this driver by pointing to various driver directories
(I downloaded the Intel chipset drivers and stored them in a
directory). It still does not recognixe it.

Do you see a way hoe I could get it to detect my drive ?

I finally did it !!

The way I solved the issue was to extract the Intel chipset drivers in
the drivers directory, copied usbstor.sys in the \windows\system32
directory.

When the hardware got detected, I gave the inf directory path for it
and it finally recognized the drivers.
