i have three major problems (please help!):

1 ) i have a sony laptop computer, f480, and have been trying to upgrade this computer for the past hour. i get a message "existing software was not fully installed...". i've re-booted the computer several times, and cannot find the 'existing software' that is causing this problem. the installation stops here.

2) there are also three programs that are not compatible with xp: novell client 32, alps pointing device, and cd recording software. i have (now had) groupwise program on this computer (my dept uses it as its email program) and deleted it. even though i removed the groupwise program, the installation program still says that 'novell client 32' is still incompatible. where do i look? i have no idea what alps pointing device is, and i removed win media player. these three programs/devices are still on my computer, according to the win xp installation program.

3) i have been trying to upgrade win xp. should i just do a new installation? if i do, will i lose all my programs (then have to reinstall all of them)?

by the way, the sony laptop originally came with win 98 and i upgraded it to win 2000 pro without any problems a few years ago.

thanks, pete

You can perform a "clean install", but you'll need to reinstall all
your programs afterward. Backup your important files and documents
to a CD before proceeding.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Hi, Peter -

I replied at length to your post in m.p.windowsupdate - if you need to post
to multiple groups, it's best to do so all at once in a single message
(separate the NG names with commas) so that everyone can follow the thread.
A lot of people subscribe to multiple groups, and this way you won't be
asking anyone to reproduce someone else's work, and everyone can benefit.

Crossposting = posting once to several newsgroups within a single message.
This is not a Bad Thing (presuming the list of groups posted to is small,
and all the groups are truly relevant to your question)

Multiposting = posting separate, identical posts to several newsgroups. This
is a Bad Thing. :)
