cannot switch identities

For the past two weeks I have been unable to switch
identities in Outlook Express. When I attempt to switch
from one identity to another, Outlook Express simply
closes down and will not reopen.

However, when I restart the computer, and open Outlook
Exp., it opens in the identity that I had attempted to
switch to. ( Out.Exp. is open in Identity A, attempt to
switch to Identity B, Out.Exp. closes and will not open,
restart computer and open Out.Exp., which opens in
Identity B.)

What's going on?
