Cannot stay signed in XP Home Edition

Whenever I try to login to my computer, I see the "loading personal setting"
and then "saving settings" and it takes me back out to the sign on screen.
This happens on both regular boot and safe mode. What can I do? I suspect
it is a virus. Any help is appreciaged

Thank you Rick. You're suggestions would have worked if I could get signed
in. I resolved the problem by booting from the OEM XP cd and doing a Repair
for Windows XP (not the Recovery Console). Thank you for taking the time to
respond. I've bookmarked your URL to use as future reference.

Hi,

Glad you got it sorted, though you did it the hard way. If you read the
article I wrote carefully, it does also describe how to fix it manually via
the Recovery Console either by booting the CD or the 6 floppy boot disk
set..

I agree, had I waited for your reply I would have saved myself a lot of
frustration. Thanks again. I truly appreciate all your help.
