Sorry for reposting here, but I tried the general list and after several
days, I didn't get any suggestion. I think this WD issue can be handled by
MS better than Symantec support for their products.
:)
The only information I found using Event Viewer doesn't add anything
interesting to what I've already said:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 27-05-2006
Time: 22:19:46
User: N/A
Computer: ATENEA
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
%%2147550931

Well, after many months running MSAS and getting updates regularly, I
decided to uninstall it, rebooted, installed GDI+ and ran the WD beta2
installer.
The installer itself didn't throw any error. However, WD couldn't start on
W2k and the message suggested I should reboot again. I did but I received
the same message again.
Went to to the Services MMC and WD was in a "stopping" state. It couldn't do
anything to it. After using Refresh several times, it was reported as
stopped.
I tried to start it manually. The error is slightly different than when
starting at boot time, but the code is here. It says:

Could not start the WD Service service on Local Computer.
Error 2147550931:

I don't know if the colon at the end suggest an error text that cannot be
displayed, but this is all I get from the dialog box.

Any hints?

Isn't it ironic that MSAS was working fine in the same computer?

I run WD on Win2KP (SP4) - 10 machines and Win2K Server (SP4) and all
work ok. Well except that I had a problem with schedules scans on the
Server but that was due to some Group Policy settings that I had set to
not allow scheduled services to run; can't remember what they were, but
it'w working now.

As a shot in the dark, there is a thread over in
microsoft.private.sypware.install titled:
WinDefend Service Failed to start - FIX!? (5/9/2006)
that may have some helpful suggestions.

in the Services MMC, you might also want to check to see that the
services WD depends on are working. Click on Dependencies. Mine are
listed as:
Remote Procedure Call(RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extentions
