Yes - network detection enabled. Tried with and without printer sharing and
sharing + password. No luck.

Networking in Windows has *always* been black magic (and I'm running out of
both ideas and young virgins to sacrifice!). Tragic that MS just never seem
to get it right with each successive OS release. I've never had these
problems with Linux.

Deke - thanks for the help ...
Make sure you have installed LLTD (link layer topology) on the XP computer:-
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en
This fixed my problem which was the same as yours.

Sadly. this voodoo didn't work either :-(

I can ping the XP machine OK. Just to reiterate ... the XP machine sees the
Vista machine fine - just not the other way round. This is beginning to annoy
me. What's the point of "upgrading" when my network is unusable?

Well I hate to say it folks, but please add me to the list :-((

I have areal old rag-bag mixture of a network: 2 x Win2k machines, 1 x XP
and 1 x Linux/Ubuntu. They can ALL see each other and can all see the Vista
machine.

From my Vista machine, I can see nothing (excepting itself).

I've tried all the fixes in this thread to no avail. I have no 3rd party
firewall on the Vista machine, but have a Sygate firewall on the other 3
Windows machines. Even with all firewalls off, the Vista machine is "blind".

My workgroup is set correctly (WORKGROUP) on all machines.

I need to sort this Vista PC out as I suspect this networking problem is
preventing me from accessing my print server (yes - all *other* machines
print to it perfectly).

HELP!!

Adam,

First make sure that your NetBT setting is consistent, and is appropriate to the
personal firewalls.

Then look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each computer, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Are there any known compatibility issues with Windows Vista home accessing a
Windows XP computer on a workgroup? I have a hard time believing we are the
only ones with this problem. I have disabled all firewalls, shared
everything, and still get an ACCESS DENIED message on the Vista computer
whenever I try to access shares on an XP computer.

Thanks for your help. -Carter

On the XP machine.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

I have 3 PC's, and 2 Notebooks on a home network. I purchased a Vista
Machine and can not see the XP Pro Machines. I have upgraded one machine to
Vista and can see the other Vista machine, but still can not see the XP
Boxes. All have file sharing and all have the same Workgroup Name.

I can ping the machines, just not connect to them

Like Mike S I agree that this is a useless reply. With a fully developed
product one does not expect to have to go into the depths that these links
lead you into. The people here, like me, are asking an end-user question,
not a developer's question!

I expected a simple answer such as ensuring the workgroup name matches.
Of course I had made sure this was right as well as correctly configuring
Norton IS firewall allowed computers addresses. Well the answer in my case,
simply, was to disable (uncheck) tcpip v6 in the properties box of the
network connection. Once that was done access to WinXP computers came up
with full access.

i have tried every thing that all of you have written and still can not
access the files on my pc that runs xp pro from my laptop that has vista
premium on it....the vista laptop sees my xp pro pc as a media device not a
computer.....anyone want to tackle this one.....i think bill gates dropped
the ball on this one......allowing vista to be on the market until all the
bugs were ironed out.....and back and forth...ect....ect.

Hi Everybody,

I have HP lappie with Vista Home Premium and Norton Internet security 2007
(preinstalled 60 days). I was facing the same problem since i bought the
laptop. I followed Sen's above said steps to reconfigure the firewall of
Norton Internet security and i can now connect between any computers, share
files, printers, etc. whether XP or Vista with windows firewall of on my
Vista.

ThankYou!!! Sen

Sen,

Many thanks! After months of off-and-on trying to solve the Vista to XP
connection problem - these NIS settings did the trick.

Hi Bill,

I deleted all my networks on the vista machine. ie network and sharing
centre, customize ,merge or delete network locations. i then rebooted the
machine and connected to the network again, and i m prompted to choose a
work, home or private network . After choosing home i could then see the xp
mach i wanted and was then able to attach its printer correctly.

hope this helps

The new versions of Norton provide a built-in firewall which has Windows
Filesharing disabled by default. You need to remove a few "general rules"
such as SMB, Windows File Sharing, and NetBIOS. Deleting these rules will
allow you to keep your Norton Firewall turned on, but allow network discovery
and file sharing. Otherwise your computer will not be visible and not other
computers visible to that computer. Gotta love Symantec, they think just
like Microsoft "hey boss, you think normal users want to do file sharing?
no, no, of course not, let's just disable it for their own good."
