Any help with this "simple" network problem would be appreciated.
(Thanks to PChuck for useful troubleshooting ideas on his website, even
though they have not yet helped me to solve my problem.)
(Also apologies to anyone who has read this before as I put it under
a less appropriate user group heading my mistake and got no responses.)
I have two computers (Athlon2 and Vaio2)
connected via a Netgear router, and in workgroup HOME3.
Athlon2 is fairly new, runs Windows XP professional SP2 with Guest
authentication.
Vaio2 is older and runs Windows XP Home SP1. (Each time I have tried to
upgrade the system
with SP2 it will not start up and I have to restore - I downloaded the patch
on Sony's
website some months ago but it was no better.)
I had only a few problems when I first set up the network and could
eventually
see shares and printers on the other computer from both computers.
This was with a 54 Mbps DG834G v3 router.
On Vaio2 there are two Network bridges left over when I selected the wrong
option
in the Network wizard, and I cannot delete them. There are also connections
to a broadband modem, and dialup services (all disconnected).
There is also a 1394 connection enabled that I cannot disable (the error
message
says that it may be using protocols that do not support Plug and Play,
or started by another user.)
I have now upgraded to a Rangemax Next Wireless-N ADSL2+ router
(model DG834N). The wireless part works fine, and I get better
internet connection on both computers. However the file and
printer sharing now does not work.
Symptoms:
From Athlon2 in My Network Places all I see are the router, the shares on
Athlon2 (and MSN).
When I View Workgroup computers I see both Athlon2 and Vaio2, but when opening
Vaio2 I get that it is "not accessible..... Network path invalid.".
From Vaio2 in My Network Places all I see are the shares on Vaio2 (and MSN),
but not the router.
When I View Workgroup computers I see only Vaio2.
Cdiag output (from PChuck) shows that:
...Athlon2 cannot ping Vaio2's IP address (but recently it was able to!);
but not the name "Vaio2" - so presumably there is a problem resolving the
name?
(It says "Could not find host")
...Vaio2 can ping Athlon2's IP addresses but not its name - error message is
"Ping request could not find host Athlon2. Please check the name and try
again."
====================================================
Notes
I have spent hours over the last week or so working through the trouble-
shooting suggestions on PChuck's Network blog.
I have uninstalled Norton Security and disabled Windows Firewall on Athlon2.
I have checked that both computers have Enable NetBios over TCP/IP set.
LSPFix says there is no Winsock2 problem on either computer.
I have disabled the Computer Browser service on Vaio2, as otherwise it
starts off its own Master Browser.
The protocol stacks on both computers are the same and "clean"
(except that they have different version numbers for AEGIS).
The relevant services are running as far as I can see.
I have ensured the ICF service is running on Vaio2, and internet security is
not on.
Restrictanonymous is set to zero on both computers.
There is no Hidden parameter on either computer.
There is no RestrictNullSessAccess on either computer.
Server comments on both computers are <48 characters.
Athlon2 does have an NVidia nForce4-A939 motherboard but I can see no
mention of
a firewall in the documentation, or how to turn it off if it is there.
=========================================
Some recent error messages in the Event Viewer (NB I may have changed
aspects of the system between these messages):-
MRxSmb) The master browser has received a server announcement from the
computer VAIO2
that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport
NetBT_Tcpip_{15DF0E6E-1E9C-49B1-BBB. The master browser is stopping or an
election is being forced.
Dhcp) The IP address lease 192.168.0.2 for the Network Card with network
address
00184D74503D has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.0.1
(The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).
Dhcp) Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from
the
DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00184D74503D.
The following error occurred: The operation was canceled by the user. .
Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the
network address (DHCP) server.
Schannel) A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credential.
