Cannot Save to Network Drive

Please help!

I returned from vacation to learn that in my absence, a temp had been using
my PC to work on certain Excel files. We're a small (3 PCs) network running
Win XP Pro. I was told the temp used the AutoUpdate function in the system
tray to install several of the updates, but was not told which specific ones.

Now, after rebooting, every time I try to save an Excel file to the network
drive I receive this error:

"The folder F:/[our network path]/excelfile.xls isn't accessible. The folder
may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the
file name contains a \ or a /."

I ensured that the file name doesn't contain any invalid characters. We also
do not have any passwords set up. Our current workaround is to save the files
to the desktop or local hard drive, and then manually move them to the
network. Obviously, this is a very tedious waste of time and I'd like to be
able to save directly to the network drive.

I can't determine what the network problem is, but I suspect it has
something to do with the updates being installed. Any help is greatly
appreciated!

*This may not be related to the above (I plan to post it in the appropriate
Outlook newsgroup)but at the same time this issue arose, another issue came
up: while Outlook is open, a popup/sign-in box appears every few minutes
asking for a password to log on to our company's website/domain name. Even if
the correct password is entered, the sign-in returns. It only "goes away"
once Outlook is closed. I believe this may be a completely separate issue.

This is likely the known serious bug with the February 8th security updates,
which sporadically and unpredictably "hides" certain folders, and in general
prevents access to network files on some but not all folders. See my post
on Feb 13th called "Xp Feb 9 update package: Invisible files in some network
folders"

The only solution currently is to remove the security updates and complain
to Microsoft.

That should be "xp Feb 8 update package: Invisible files in some network
folders"

The likely culprit is the update kb885250 (add or remove programs, show
updates, windows hotfix kb885250). Remove it. If that doesn't work,
uninstall the rest of the Feb 8th updates.
