Cannot restart my HP computer with HP original Recovery Disks

R

Ritter197

I have a HP Pavilion a1610n Desktop computer, Product Number RC652AA, Serial
Number CNH6320HW2. The original HP Recovery disks 1 and 2 , HP5013-7947,
Build 64NAemMPA3 did the initial reformat and went through the normal
process including setting up Windows XP for my personal preferences and
after it finished ask to "restart".
I did that and since then nothing happens when I turn on the computer.
Inserting the HP recovery disks again does not do anything either. The
screen stays dark.
The computer is on, I can see the hard disk spinning, the CD drive is fine,
I can hear it spin up, and the monitor is connected and powered up (I can
exercise brightness control for example)

What do I do now to get the computer working again?

I'll ask lots of questions - don't get mad - just asking everything up
front.

Part numbers mean nothing to me so please break up your message into steps.
The disks - One version uses hidden D partition to restore XP, other CDs do
a full restore from scratch. Do you know which happened ?
and a little background :
XP was bad ? so you did a QuickRestore ?
When you started did you have a C (system)and D (restore) partition ?
Did you boot from CD ? or from XP chose Restore ?
Sounds like full install vs Restore , right?
Re: " initial reformat " ?
Did you REINSTALL XP image (successfully), it did the format and then
rebooted.
It then walked you thru the install ?

Have you tried booting with no disk in CD ? ( to make sure boot CD not
trying to read something not yet written to disk)

Try unplugging the computer from the wall outlet for a minute or two and
then plug it back in and see if it will fire up.

Does no part of the boot sequence show? Did the plug come disconnected
from the back of the tower?

Suggest calling HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836. Support is free if you
are still within your warranty period, usually 12 months. This is
supposed to be a 24/7 operation.

It appears that something is not working on your video end, since you got
thru the install and setting your personal settings etc, then a reboot and
nothing is displayed, but you can hear the cd drive spinning up, and the HD,
that says there is activity, you just can't see it.

Try a different monitor (borrow one from someone), ensure your video cables
are connected properly. focus on video as being the cause. Take it to a good
repair shop.

R

Ritter197

The PLUG did not disconnect or I would see no hard drive activity at the
bottom of the computer and the power plug on monitor is also OK and plugged
in.

R

Ritter197

I did and spoke to them over 1 hour. Result - they have NEVER had an
experience like that before and will send new System Recovery disks, even
though I am SURE, that is not the problem. That is why I am posting here.

R

Ritter197

I carefully read both referrals. I could not find anything in there that
would solve my problem, since it says to do this or that once a certain
message appears. I get no message and the screen remains black. But the
monitor is plugged into computer and power supply.

R

Ritter197

I shall try that and report back. Something a little more complicated but I
will try.

R

Ritter197

I have done that now for 10 minutes. Started up again, no results to report.
I will let it run through the night, I think.

I have done these things before and NEVER had any problems for myself or for
friends, where I helped them.

FWIW, I believe sgopus seems to be on the right track.

But just to be sure...

You stated, "Inserting the HP recovery disks again does not do anything
either." Were you booting off the hard drive or the CD? Are you able to
access the BIOS? (And if you are unable to access the BIOS, again I
agree this sounds like a video problem.)

R

Ritter197

I tried the monitor now on a different desktop (also HP) and it immediately
comes up with Windows 7.
So - we can rule out monitor for sure.

R

Ritter197

I tried both, because HP support said to try again use their original System
Restore disks.
It does not work.
Staring the computer from the hard disk also does not work.

The monitor is fine. Just put it on a another computer and it comes right
up. (also HP but with Windows 7)

1. The disks are the supplied disks from HP called System Recovery.
2. It did a total format and went through all normal operations, never got
stuck. It just does not start up the computer anymore.
3. Before I did have a C:\ drive and a D:\drive restore partition.
4. I wanted to restore the computer to factory condition before I would give
it away. So I used the HP official System Recovery disks.
5. It did initially restore Windows XP (the HP version) since the screen
showed Windows XP. But after it asks to reboot, it brought up nothing.
6. I tried rebooting without disk, with CTL and Backspace, with holding down
F11, F10, ESC, Delete. Nothing helped to show anything on screen

You didn't read carefully enough, in the first article under the section
"Recovering During Startup" and in the second article under "Starting A
Recovery" they state:
<quote>
Turn on the computer.
Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key
repeatedly until a recovery menu appears.

Looking at the second article I find in it:
<quote>
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the
following:
NOTE: If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from
a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the
initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a
recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer,
depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).
