Cannot remove a file from the disk.

I have a file I tried to download from a website but lost the connection
before it could download. I now have a file c:\temp\abc.xls. in my directory
but it has zero length. It has the dot after the xls extension. I cannot
delete it. When I try it says cannot find the file on the disk. I cannot
rename it for the same reason.

I have run a disk analysis or check disk and also a disk defragment - to no
avail. I cannot see the file from DOS.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When I try to back up the disk it fails on that file.

Boot the machine in Safe Mode, start a Command Prompt,
then type this command:
del "c:\temp\abc*.*" {Enter}

Try using the "Utility for Deleting Invalid Files", DelinvFile.exe,
which can be downloaded (free) from
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm
The problem seems to be linked to the fact that the filename ends with
a dot. I have had similar experiences. Don't know the reason.

This utility has helped some delete a file with an invalid file name.
