Cannot reconnect RDC after unexpected disconnect

Hi
I connect to an XP Pro machine at work, from an XP Home Desktop at home that is hardwired behind a wireless router. I connect to work over a VPN.

I was happily connected yesterday, when my 2.4GHz cordless phone rang and promptly upset my router and therefore my connection.

This disconnected my RDC connection, and when I tried connecting again it failed with "Cannot connect to remote computer". I believe it thinks my old session is still 'active' although I cannot get back into it!!! Help! I am in work today, and the PC is fine.. and no doubt when I go home it will work happily again... but if I am stuck at home I need to restore or reset my connection.

Thanks!!

Thanks for replying LANWench..
Rebooting works.. but on a snow day its hard to find someone around
Also is it not a good idea to perform a hard reboot of the locked machine? ...and I don't want to give out my user info..

Any chance of doing this remotely?

There might be other tools but you can try shutdown.exe or tsshutdn.exe, use
/? for detail on parameters.

Thanks Huei..
I thought that after I logged off the remote connection in the controlled way, someone can go to the machine, sign on and see all of the applications that I was running remotely, still up and running. I was hoping that after an unexpected disconnect, I could remotely log on again to continue the <unsaved> work that was open at the time of the disconnect..

Rebooting the host machine seems a little drastic.. is there a way to disconnect the inactive (abruptly disconnected) session

Thanks for your time and help with this...!!

You can use Terminal Services Manager or tsdiscon.exe to disconnect a
session but if you have logoff, all application will terminate so there is
no way to get back to original state

From your original posting, "Cannot connect to remote computer", this sounds
like network connectivity issue, can you check the state of your session via
Terminal Services Manager or qwinsta /server:<your server name>

I haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet... I will post as soon as I do

Let me know if you find a method too..

This is important on a server machine when you have more sessions to
connect to.. For instance, I can connect to a Windows 2003 Server
twice using two separate TS sessions... This policy will force you to
log onto the first session...

It won't have the effect you are talking about. For what you are
considering, make sure Fast User Switching is enabled and you should
get the experience you are looking for.

For now, this GP article does not have an affect on XP Pro.
