Cannot receive e-mails

FedUpNow

I am having a problem receiving e-mails and get the following error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'POP3.blueyonder.co.uk',
Server: 'POP3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I have checked the settings and they appear to be correct and I have no
problem sending e-mails.

Any ideas?

That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off.

I'm running the free AVG version 8.0.138. How do I turn it off - sory am not
very pc literate!

Turning off email scanning in AVG is not sufficient.
Chances are, you installed AVG antivirus using its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to forego installing the troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

THANK YOU so much for your help. Have uninstalled the AVG antivirus and have
now received my e-mails. Just have to reinstall it now and "custom" install
as recommended.

Thanks again.

Having same problem. Have AVG 8.01.138 and new spybot 1.6.0 download
yesterday along with Vista security updates by a friend by remote. Could this
be my problem also? Thanks CJ

Very possibly, if you have AVG scanning your email.

Same problem my error reads
Account: 'mail.bresnan.net', Server: 'mail.bresnan.net', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR incorrect password or account name', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I have had this computer, this email, the same antivirus (McAfee) and until
I shut down the pc on 7/22/08 and turned it on 7/23/08 I have never had to
type in my user name or password and it still won't accept them. I have read
thru a lot of these comments have tried several and nothing is changing. I
am also not pc savay. Please help me.

One thing you might try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that mail account.
If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.

That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Tools | Accounts
Select the account and click Properties.
On the Servers tab re-enter the username and password agreed to by you and
your server,

What anti-virus do you use?

I have the same problem - with the addition that I am ok with computers!

The problem is internittant - no rational behind it - other than that the
GoogleMail server is 'often' down - which I doubt!

I start Windows Mail (on Vista Ultimate portable PC) configured to
automatically send/receive mail at start-up. It asks me for Username and
Password. I enter it once and it keeps asking me again, till it opens the
Send/Receive progress window (ctrl-M to show at first start-up) to inform of
error.

I ignore it and get my work done directly from the brower (from the Site).
Sometime later, I try it again and it still does not work - again sometime
later (no specific wait-period) - I try it and it works - downloads messages
from the google mail server!

Very odd erratic behavior!

Will appreciate any illumination on how to get rid of this irritant and
un-productive behavior.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have the same problem.
Can send mail, but not receive.

It started when I took my computer to a friend.
Windows Mail was ok there, but it started when I came home.

Already tried to uninstall AVG scanner.
Was not a solution.

Error message:
Het verbinding maken met de server is mislukt. Account: 'pop.hetnet.nl',
Server: 'pop.hetnet.nl', Protocol: POP3, Poort: 995, Beveiligd(SSL): Nee,
Socket-fout: 10061, Foutnummer: 0x800CCC0E

Thanks in advance !

Hi, it's me again.

Never mind my question.
I changed port from 995 to 110, and changed security for incoming mail.

Problem solved !

(Next problem: how to get AVG Free Edition back....)

Thanks for reporting back. There are two rules to remember:
Port 995 (if your provider offers it) must always be used with the SSL option.
Port 110 (the standard receive port) does not use SSL.

I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials over AVG Free:
