cannot ping computer

I have upgraded a HP laptop with windows XP pro with SP1 and reloaded all the
network drivers from HP's site. I cannot access the internet so that I can do
all the critical updates and SP2 install. The computer will get an IP
address from dhcp, has joined our workgroup, can see the server and log onto
the server in windows explorer, but cannot join the domain or access the
internet or be pinged by any other computer. It can ping both the server and
the gateway, but nothing else. I have tried the winsock repair and it
didn't work either. I have tried everything with both the NIC and Wlan.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The Winsock repair can require one of several tools, none of which is known to
be more effective than the others, in solving all problems related to LSP /
Winsock corruption. Be patient and persistent.

If you absolutely tried all LSP / Winsock repairs, as described above, let's
look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from the problem computer, AND from 2 properly working ones, so we
can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Your DNS server is woriking?
Can you resolve computer name (NetBIOS name) to IP?
Can you Ping using Computer Name instead of IP?
