Cannot paste special Char. into replace window

I am using Word 2002. On older versions of Word I could do this. I want to
globally replace each underscore with underscore no-width optional break.
I copy the underscore no-width optional break but when I cntl-V it into the
replace window only the underscore gets there.
I previously used this feature. When I got a document with unknown special
characters (from unknown application) I could copy the special character
and cntl-V paste it into the find box and globally get rid of all of them.
Is there still a way to do this.

Copy the character. Then in Replace with, type ^c
which is the clipboard contents.
