Cannot overtype in Word 2002

I am using Word 2002. However, when I select a sentence
and attempt to replace it with another string, it just
inserts the string in front of the selected text.

Is there anything wrong and it works fine in the past.

Hi, Peter. In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces selection" box.
