"Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access"

When error-checking my C: drive for possible errors --
which used to be known as ScanDisk prior to WindowsXP --
the following message appears upon program
startup: "Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access." The
attempted error-checking aborts. Anyone have an idea of
the problem? I ran an earlier System Restore, but it did
not solve the problem.

That error means that the disk checking needs a "locked" disk; if the
computer is running normally, the disk contents are continuously being
changed and the check fails. From the run command type: cmd[enter].
This opens the command window, type: chkdsk[space]/f. chkdsk runs,
reports the disk is not locked, and invites you to do the check on the
next reboot. Type "y", then reboot, and chkdsk will run.

Hi,
My pc has the same problem. It seems Microsoft is
working on a solution. See Knowledge Base Article -
