Cannot open registry editor / Task Manager

When I try to type "regedit" via Start > Run menu, the
Registry Editor starts up for a few seconds and then
disappear. The same problem occurs in Task Manager. I
could not stop any application from running.

Possibly an RPC crash due to a virus.
Did you patch (MS03-026)

Good point - I was thinking XP - I'm not sure about W2k. Email Kelly via her web site, she will be able to help you.

Hello,

I have the same problem than Bibi. I can't run Regedit but i have no problem
with the Task Manager.
I effectively had the virus LovSan/MSBlast but now, my system is safe and I
applied the MS03-026 patch. However, the problem still occurs, the registry
is killed as soon as it is launched.
Maybe the virus has "damaged" my configuration in the RPC settings (the
"services.msc /s" thing).
I can't find what could be the wrong settings.
If anyone can help... ;)

Francois.

I concur with the post lower in the hierarchy regarding
the RPC problem or the "blaster" worm.

I had the same problems as you. I eradicated the worm and
magically the side effects went away. The side effects of
the worm are not well documented by the anti-virus
companies particularly in the case of W2K.

My advice is to go to another machine, download the
Microsoft Hotfix and a removal tool. Disconnect the
infected machine from the internet (pull the cable). Apply
the Hotfix and then run the removal tool. Then reconnect
to the internet.

regards,

Jack.

Unfortunately, I still have the problem with my registry, it's auto-killed
after a few milliseconds when i start it. What's strange is that when il
double-click a .reg file to update it, the message box saying the data has
been added is also killed.
I am sure i do not have the virus anymore (nor any variants, i used the
symantec antivirus and the microsoft patch).
I'm using W2K with SP2.
How could i know which process is killing my application?
