Cannot open Photos

C

Christopher

I have several years worth of digital photos stored on my
computer. Over the last couple of days, I have noticed
that some of the photos cannot be opened with any
program - including picture and fax viewer, paint,
PhotoStudio, etc. Further, I have my CD collection
stored as MP3 files on my computer, and somehow the paths
have been mixed up or something. For instance, if I go
to the Stevie Ray Vaughn folder and open "Texas Flood", I
get a beatles song. Also, when I try to play a saved
video clip, sometimes a song will play instead. I have
not installed any new programs recently. I run Norton
Utilities regularly. I downloaded today's (8/3/04)virus
definitions and ran a deep scan, and found nothing.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

Look at your file names. Obviously you know that the photo file names should
be:
filename.jpg
Anything different from this?
Since you indicated that "some" of the photos not "all the photos" cannot be
opened I would think that this is not a virus problem. Maybe you renamed
some photo files but did not include the .jpg extension when renaming. As
for your MP3 files, somebody else will have to help.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. None of the
photos have been renamed. They are all still the .jpg
files as downloaded from the camera. The computer still
recognizes them as image files. What is weird is that
some photo directories are just fine. Others have some
photos that open fine and others that do not. The reason
that I mentioned the mp3 and video files is that I think
it is probably all the same problem, as everything has
happened at the same time.

I'm thinking you may have a corrupted user profile.

Thank you for the response...I tried creating a new User
Profile and going from there, but I am still having the
same problems. I guess I will try to post this on one of
the more "general" boards, as I have a feeling it is not
just photo related. Any other ideas?

I wonder if the following info would address the issue?

I really appreciate your help John. Changing the "folder
key" in the registry was a good thing to do as I have way
more than 200 local folders. That TweakUI utility has
got some really handy functions. Thanks! Unfortunatly,
those things didn't help. One other thing that my
windows explorer has been doing that may or may not be
related is that it randomly crashes. Some days it does
just fine, and others it seems to just close every few
minutes. Today is one of those days. In my event
viewer, I get an event ID of 1002 and a message that The
Shell stopped unexpectedly.

Internet Explorer works fine, but I went ahead and ran
thru the steps anyway. I do not have that Shell64.dll
file....it is windows explorer that crashes....I did just
try something new - I used internet explorer to access
the files on my computer with the same results/problems
as before
