Cannot open a JPEG by double clicking it.

If I double click on a Jpeg file on my desktop - nothing happens.
If I right click and choose open with "Windows Photo Gallery" - nothing
happens.
If I right click & set the default program to open with "Windows Photo
Gallery" then try and open it - nothing happens.

If I open a JPEG attachement on an email from within Outlook it opens up
straight away in Windows Photo Gallery no problem.

Also if I open Windows Photo Gallery first and then locate the JPEG it again
opens fine.

But I just cant open Jpegs up directly by double clicking on them.

FYI: I bought a Vista Capable notebook with XP Pro then installed the Vista
Business Upgrade.

Have you tried this on more than just one jpeg on your desktop? Just asking
to make sure it's not a corrupt file.

Thankyou DP for taking the time to read my post.

I can confirm it is not a corrupt file. I now also know that I can open
Jpegs providing I save them anywhere other than the Desktop.

So it's clearly something with my desktop that is stopping them from being
opened.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, RyanR

yeah, you're attempting to open a *.lnk file instead of a *.jpg file.
You want a jpg file on the desktop, stick it there. not the shortcut linkto it.
And it's not your desktop, it's the programs you're using. They don't recognize *.lnk as a valid image file extension.

Try moving everything other than .jpgs off your desktop into a folder
elsewhere, then see if the .jpgs open. Under XP, I once had an issue where
an invalid shortcut on the desktop prevented previewing photos on the
Desktop.

Thanks Keith you fixed it!

When I upgraded from XP some of the programs that came with the Notebook
(that had shortcuts on the desktop) no longer worked as they should when I
installed Vista.

After removing these shortcuts my Jpegs now open!!!!!

You da MAN!
