Cannot log on to my Windows Vista computer

Yesterday I got a message that I had some Windows update (I believe
for Windows Media Player). So I began the download and it asked me to
restart my computer. When my computer reloaded, it began installing
the three updates. When it got to the third, my computer said
restarting and turned off. Now when I try to turn on my computer, when
it gets to the point where I should be able to log in, all i see is a
black screen and my mouse, instead of the "Welcome" and password page.
Startup Repair cannot fix the problem and I've tried to do system
restore but it keeps failing as well. Short of full system restore to
factory settings, I've tried everything I can think of. Can anyone
tell me anything else I can try to keep me from having to take it to
BestBuy and paying them to fix it?

Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the Internet, freely
available to anyone who can use Google.
