cannot log on any XP user accounts

Guest

When I try to log on, it begins "logging on", switches immediately to
"logging off"-"saving settings" and back to welcome screen, in both normal &
safe modes, for both user accounts. Have also tried "Last Known Good
Configuration" and "Debugging Mode" with same result. Last user reported
nothing unusual (emails, im's, websites) and logged off normally (did not
turn off). XP Home Ed. on a Dimension 2400; have run Dell Diagnostics -
including symptom tree - and hard drive checks from the "Advanced Options"
menu, all tests passed. Any ideas on how I can get in far enough to run
virus scan, or - what? Your help is appreciated...

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892893

------

Or the problem may be an incorrect system drive letter. With a networked
machine, open the registry and connect to the problematic machine and
navigate to:

[MACHINE_NAME\HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]

and delete all values that look like this:

\DosDevices\C
\DosDevices\D
\DosDevices\E
and so on

When finished, make sure you disconnect the machine from the registry. There
are other ways to gain access to the registry if you cannot connect to the
problematic machine via networked Registry.

checked link for wsaupdater.exe, fixes I understand involve using start key
which I cannot access (cannot log on); this is not a networked machine; drive
letter is correct...

You need to boot from your Windows XP CD and enter the recovery console
first. Then follow the directions under the subsection "Use Recovery Console
to copy Userinit.exe to Wsaupdater.exe". When you have completed this task,
then you can follow the rest of the KB 892893 directions.

I do not have XP disc per se (came installed on computer), have Dell

I am unsure if you can use the the Dell Reinstall CD to enter the recovery

reinstall XP, I would cancel the setup immediately.

Do you have a floppy drive? You can enter the Recovery console by using

I've run into this before. Maybe a shot in the dark but try disconnecting
all USB devices. If you have a USB keyboard or mouse switch to a PS2 and
try it. It's worth a try.

Good Luck,

OK, when you were in the recovery console did you select which Windows
installation you would like to log onto? Usually you would type 1 and then
press enter. Then you would type the built-in Administrator's password and
press enter. (The password is usually blank [nothing] for XP Home)

Once you have enter the Admin password, you should type following:

cd system32 [then press ENTER]
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe [then press ENTER]
exit [then press ENTER]

Now the computer should exit the recovery console and reboot the computer.
You should be able to log into Windows now. When you have logged into
Windows successfully, then you need to follow the subsection [Modify the

I tried what you wrote ( I did get the recovery console through/from the Dell

do now get a "glimpse" of wallpaper before it logs off. "btw": the computer
I'm using now is Win 98 sp2 - would not allow me to make setup disks; I don't
know if that means anything. Another "btw": I've only got the CRT, ps/2 mouse
& ps/2 keyboard hooked up (all Dell's that came w/ the pc). Thaks, again...

Can you create a BartPE bootable CD with your Dell CD on another Windows
2000/XP machine? BartPE will not run on Windows 98.

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
There is lots of information on how to create the CD on their web pages.

When and if you create the CD, I will be able to help you further. I do
beleive you probably have an incorrect drive letter since the recovery
console was no help.

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892893

------

Or the problem may be an incorrect system drive letter. With a
networked
machine, open the registry and connect to the problematic
machine
and
navigate to:

[MACHINE_NAME\HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]

and delete all values that look like this:

\DosDevices\C
\DosDevices\D
\DosDevices\E
and so on

When finished, make sure you disconnect the machine from the
registry.
There
are other ways to gain access to the registry if you cannot
connect
to
the
problematic machine via networked Registry.

I tried what you wrote ( I did get the recovery console through/from the
Dell
Reinstallation CD - forgot to mention I had already been past the password
part OK), and it was spot-on, but after reboot I still can't log on - but
I
do now get a "glimpse" of wallpaper before it logs off. "btw": the
computer
I'm using now is Win 98 sp2 - would not allow me to make setup disks; I
don't
know if that means anything. Another "btw": I've only got the CRT, ps/2
mouse
& ps/2 keyboard hooked up (all Dell's that came w/ the pc). Thaks,
again...

I (finally) burnt the PEbuilder cd; when I tried to boot it from boot device
menu I get "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". Pressing F1 I get
the same message; F2 does bring me to utility's; esc brings me back to error
message. Did the cd burn properly or am I missing something else? (thanks
again for your help)

I've gotten into recovery console (thank you, again), tried "copy"
command,
but it tells me the parameter is not valid. I know I'm missing
something -
?

OK, when you were in the recovery console did you select which Windows
installation you would like to log onto? Usually you would type 1 and
then
press enter. Then you would type the built-in Administrator's password
and
press enter. (The password is usually blank [nothing] for XP Home)

Once you have enter the Admin password, you should type following:

cd system32 [then press ENTER]
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe [then press ENTER]
exit [then press ENTER]

Now the computer should exit the recovery console and reboot the
computer.
You should be able to log into Windows now. When you have logged into
Windows successfully, then you need to follow the subsection [Modify the
registry] directions from the follwoing KB article.

I do not have XP disc per se (came installed on computer), have Dell
Reinstall CD for XP Home (SP 1a) - can I use that? Also have
"ResourceCD"
(drivers/diagnostics/utilities) and "Tools" (antivius/support)...
Thank
you...

I am unsure if you can use the the Dell Reinstall CD to enter the
recovery
console. You could always try, but if the Dell CD wants to format and
reinstall XP, I would cancel the setup immediately.

Do you have a floppy drive? You can enter the Recovery console by
using
Windows XP Setup floppy disks

If you have installed Service Pack, then download these setup disks.

:

checked link for wsaupdater.exe, fixes I understand involve using
start
key
which I cannot access (cannot log on); this is not a networked
machine;
drive
letter is correct...

You need to boot from your Windows XP CD and enter the recovery
console
first. Then follow the directions under the subsection "Use
Recovery
Console
to copy Userinit.exe to Wsaupdater.exe". When you have completed
this
task,
then you can follow the rest of the KB 892893 directions.
