Cannot log off Win2000 Server

Lance Kuttner

I recently created a Win2000 Server administrative user
account. We logged onto the server with this account,
assigned a password and then attempted to log out. When
logging out though, the shutdown window just disappears
and we are returned to the desktop. This happened on both
of our two servers.

Can anyone help? I have had a look around the Policies but
there does not seems to be anything out of the ordinary
there.

There is a group policy to prohibit log off under user
configuration/admin temp/system/log on/off. Of couse there may be other
issues - possibly corrupt profile. Check Event Viewer for any clues. Try
logging on as local administrator to see if it happens. You can also use
gpresult to track down how policy is being applied.--- Steve

Only time I've seen this if you've configured auto admin
logon. Maybe check that?

I'm not sure how understandable this is, but here goes:

I've had this problem before while running OpenOffice.org.

What I was finding that a process was not ending when I
tried to log-off. Look in Task Manager and see if there's
a running process that should be closed but isn't. If you
end it, you may be able to log-off.

With OpenOffice.org, it was leaving 'soffice.exe' running -
I could spot this was causing the problem as I knew it
wasn't required by the OS and it's systray the system tray
icon was still there. Once I ended the process, the system
logged off immediately.
