Cannot install updates...

Cal Thomas

Sorry, this is a cross post from help and support forum as well.

-------------------

On a laptop running windows xp sp2, I am trying to install downloaded
updates using Custom and get the following error boxes:

first one that says problem with

wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

then next box says
problem with
Generic Host Process for winsvcs32 has encountered a problem and needs
to close

then finally
ntauthority\system does a mandatory shutdown in 60 secs due to a RPC
call error

and computer reboots.

I haven't seen this problem before.

Any ideas where to start?

I have already unchecked all startup items from msconfig startup tab
Have ran 3 registry checkers successfully
Have updated spywareblaster
updated and ran spybot
updated and ran adaware

I also get a frozen window in the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen
