Cannot Install Canon pixma MP510

My Canon MP510 printer installs fine on my XP laptop but not on my desktop
(Dell Dimension 8300, XP SP2). Installation procedure until I am ordered to
plugin and turn on the printer. It says it cannot locate the printer. When I
choose the printer port manually, it finishes the installation 'succesful',
but when printing the printer isn't found. When using the Windows installer
(that sometimes does see the printer at printer power on) it gives the error
message, saying the driver may be for Windows 95 or later (?). I suppose the
registry is corrupted somewhere, but how to proceed from here?

Disconnect the printer from the PC. Uninstall everything relating to the
printer from the Control Panel.

Reboot the PC.

Make sure you have the latest drivers from the Canon website..... install
the driver package before connecting the printer to the PC. If you still
have problems, try another USB port. Also read through the FAQ and
Troubleshooting pages at the Canon website at:
