Cannot install any updates

This XP home edition machine refuses to accept any updates at all. This is the message it gives me: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure the Crytographic service is running on this computer

The things I have looked into and followed are:
MS knowledge base article 813442, Detecting Digital Signing Issues in Win XP
MS knowledge base article 822798, You cannot install some updates or programs
MS knowledge base article 119591, How to obtain MS support files from online services
MS knowledge base article 323166, How to download Win updates and drivers from the win update catalog

I have checked into the services.msc. The Crytographic service is running/started

What am I missing here
