Cannot initialize disk (external harddrive)

Hi, I have a 250gig harddrive inside an enclosure which works fine for
the most part. The harddrive is NTFS and is about filled up. I am
having problems getting into it now after I have unplugged it from my
laptop. I have gone to disk management and attempted to initialize
disk, and it says it cannot. I dont want to run scandisk because it
takes 10+ hours, and I am sure eventually it will randomally work
suddenly. Is there any way i can make the harddrive ignore errors in
the disk and just work? This is realy annoying because I always try to
safely remove my hardrive from my laptop, but IT NEVER LETS ME.. it
always says disk is in use, so i unplug it anyway. Anybody know how to
make my computer recognize my harddrive... also.. it is attached
through usb 2.0, and I currently have anohter external HD attached,
which has never given me any problems. Thanks to anyone who has a
suggestion.
