Cannot hear dvds/cds through laptop, assistance sought please

Help please?
I have a Packard Bell EasyNote laptop, bout a year old.
It is running Windows XP Version 2002 service pack 2.
My problem, or misunderstanding, is that I cannot hear sound from my
dvds/cds, unless through my headphones. I have checked and double-checked my
settings, and am pretty confident they are ok!
Should I be able to hear sound, or do I need speakers? I thought I should
hear something through the laptop itself, as windows sounds are heard.
I am totally baffled, having a very grey day.
All help gretaly appreciated, thanks, Barbara

You need either speakers or headphones to hear sound. The system speaker
is for beep tones only.

In older versions of Windows it was possible to play sound - poorly -
through the system speaker.

I don't know where you got the idea from that Windows does not have sound
without headphones. I have now sorted my laptop, and have sound for both dvd
and cd, without the inconvenience of headphones.
Your reply just didn't seem right, so I investigated further, and everyone I
spoke to had sound on their XP laptops.

Ooops - I read past the part where you said you had a laptop.

Nonetheless, my incorrect answer moved you to solve your problem, so at
least some good came out of it. ;-)
