Cannot get sound on my computer.......

I just completed a clean installation on my Dell 2400. I downloaded all the
files and drivers from the discs that came with it and cannot get any sound.
I keep getting an error message in Volume Control that says: There are no
active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control
Panel, click Printers and other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. I have
tried this repeatedly and it does not work. I had sound before, it worked
flawlessly with no problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Open Device Manager (right-click on My Computer => Properties =>
Hardware tab).
Expand 'Sound, video and game controllers'.
Are there any yellow alarms?
If so, you may have to install/re-iinstall the sound drivers for your
sound card.

Have you gone to the dell site and downloaded the latest audio driver for
your system?
