Cannot find file

Robert Runkel

When I attempt to execute a program by clicking on its
icon, I get the following error message:
'Cannot find the file (or one of its components). Make
sure the path and filename are correct, and that all
required libraries are available.' I am running Windows
2000 (SP4). This just happened a few days ago - all was
working well before this?
(Please respond to my email address ([email protected]), as I
haven't been able to find posts I've made to this newsgroup!)

What happens when you do this:
- Click START
- Click RUN
- Type c:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe {OK}

Do you get a black window? If so, what you see when you
type this command:

I posted a similar problem to this group on September 15, and since I
did not get a solution, I'll repost it in this thread:
--------------------------------------------------------
Subject: "Cannot find file" error when using run command

I have Windows 2000 Pro, and it has the following annoying behavior.
If I try to execute a command by Start->Run, and then typing the
command, I get a "Cannot find file" error. However, the program
*does* start.

E.g., upon Start->Run->cmd, an error box appears that says

Cannot find file 'cmd' (or one of its components). Make sure the
path and filename are correct and that all shared libraries are
available.

Nevertheless, the command line box for c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
opens and is functional -- i.e., cmd.exe is executed.

On searching the Web and in particular groups, I saw this problem
posted about 3 years ago in annoyances.org, but no solution.

--------------------------------------------------
If I try to run any (.exe) program from Start->Run, the same thing
happens.

My path is D:\BITWARE;d:\perl\bin;d:\batch;d:\tc\bin;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM

I upgraded from Win 98, and my Win 2000 system files are installed in
C:\windows. I have had this annoyance ever since the upgrade.

I'm sorry, when I type in c:\winnt\system32.cmd.exe, I get
the error msg below, and no other screen, and when I type
in path, I get the error msg below and no other screen.
Someone said someone else haqd the same problem, and wiped
out a virus and reloaded IE6 - I tried it, and still got
the same error, as McAfee Virus scan did not find any viruses.

Something appears to be fundamentally wrong with your
machine. If it was mine then I would do this:
- Launch Internet Explorer, than scan the machine for viruses
via www.antivirus.com
- Log on under a different account and check if the problem
persists.
