Cannot find dvd drive on 2nd channel

Nick

I have just installed a Gigabyte GA-81945P pro motherboard. If I
install the IDE HD on 1st channel (red) and DVD drive on 2nd channel
(green) - the hd shows up ok but dvd drive is not shown anywhere.

If I put HD on 2nd channel (greenP) and DVD-Drive on 1st channel (red),
the dvd is picked up as master drive and hd is picked up as part of
Raid as IDE0 and attempts to go into windows from the hd and crashes.

Why cant I see the DVD-drive on 2nd channel (green)?

You have to change the DVD-drive's jump to 'slaver', you can view the
DVD-drive, there may be some hint for you.

Yes I set both of them (HD and DVD drive) to master and put them on
primary (red channel) and 2nd (green channel).

I tried all sorts of bios settings... no luck.

Can you go into the BIOS and check that the IDE ports are configure to
automatically detect all devices (normally says AUTO)? Not sure where
Raid detection is coming from. Do you need RAID? If not you could try
disabling that in the BIOS. Also you didn't say what make the HD is.
Sure some need jumpers changing if they are stand alone on an IDE port
or master w/ slave etc, which could cause issues.

Sounds like the green channel is a Raid controller. These often will NOT
work with optical drives. Have you RTFM? Review says THREE PATA connectors.

Yes, the 2 green ide channels are part of raid and I have tried various
settings in bios.

Ok, the hd (master setting) shows up on 1st channle (red), the DVD
drive (master) does not show on the 2nd channel (green). XP starts up
ok from HD.

If I put the DVD drive on 1st channel (red) it shows up ok, I put HD on
2nd channel (green) it shows part of raid as IDE0. Fine up to this
point. Then the pc attempts to launch xp from the hd and gets part way
through and crashes with BSD. I could live with this setup if Xp would
get launched ok.

Have you read the manual? The first IDE port is next to the motherboard
20 pin power socket. The two together are for RAID.

The specs from the Gigabyte website show this:

1 x UDMA ATA 100/66/33 connectors
2 x UDMA ATA 133/100/66 connectors (For HDDs only)

So, the red connector will take any type of IDE device. The green
connectors are for hard drives only. That's why the DVD drive won't work
on a green port.

You need to read your manual regarding configuring the Raid for just one
hard drive. Does the motherboard require a separate driver for the RAID
ports? If so, and you've installed Windows while your hard drive was on
the red ATA connector, then the windows won't access the hard drive
properly when you've got it on the Raid connector.

The HD is from the old pc. It has a lot of software on it which I dont
fancy re-installing.

Is there any way I can get this IDE hd working on raid?

none of this software (maybe 1% will) will work, as it has not been
INSTALLED in the new OS.
