Cannot email to a web page link

If I am on a web page and it has an email addr listed and I select it instead
of bringing up a new email dialog box from my outlook 2003 it gives me an
error message:
Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed.

I have reinstalled outlook but has had no effect. In my internet settings
Microsoft Office Outlook is selected as my default email client.
I have office xp installed and then installed Outlook 2003 seperately.

Thanks for any help.

Check the mailto associations in the registry.

Are there any other email clients installed?
Are you trying to use Word as your email editor?

i am having a similar issue . however the error message i receive is **
Cannot start microsoft outlook. Can't create the item ** I am using outlook
2002 on XP SP2. i share this computer with my husband and i believe he may
have Outlook Express but it has never been used on my profile.First , how
do I check to see if there are other email clients and how do I know if
Word is being used as the email editor. i would also like to apologize for
hijacking this thread if that is what i have done here. i started my own
thread and did not receive any replies and i thought that since this issue
was similar and it had received replies i would ask again here. i hope this
is not bad forum ettiquette but if it is i am very sorry. thanks in advance

You should have a list of email clients in the programs tab of IE
properties. Is Outlook set as default there?

See if this helps:
Close Outlook
1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Search.
2. In the Search Results dialog box, click All files and folders under
Search Companion.
3. In the All or part of the file name box, type outcmd.dat, and then
click Search.
4. In the right-hand pane, right-click the Outcmd.dat file, and then
click Rename.
5. Type outcmd.old, and then press ENTER.
6. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to rename "Extend.dat" to "Extend.old" and
"Frmcache.dat" to "Frmcache.old."
7. Start Microsoft Outlook.
8. On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair.
9. In the Detect and Repair dialog box, click to select the Restore my
shortcuts while repairing check box, and then click Start. Follow the
instructions on your screen to complete the repair process. The Detect and
Repair utility recreates the files you renamed.

I had the same problem with Outlook 2003. It seems a common problem is the
frmcache.dat file becoming corrupted though I don't know how. In my case, I
simply deleted frmcache.dat, closed Outlook 2003, restarted it (a new
frmcache.dat is created) and now all is well. Hope this helps.
