I'm curious how my js extension had " C:\WINDOWS\System32\Notepad.exe %1 "
in there.

I'm using Windows XP. The automatic update keeps
installing the same critical udates every day. But the
BIGGER problem: When I go to the Windows Update site for
the available recommended and driver updates, they don't
download. It scans my drive, lets me know what's
available, lets me select what I want, and lets me accept
the licensing agreement. I then get the box with the two
progress bars (one for download , one for installation).
That's where it ends. No download. Ever. No funny
business involved... I paid retail for XP and activated
it several months ago, and no changes have been made to
my CPU, MoBo, hard drive, or ISP. I'm not a newbie, am I
missing something obvious?Message 2 in thread

Hello,

This is from the troubleshooter page:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot

Please re-register the following files:
regsvr32 msscript.ocx
regsvr32 dispex.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK."
3. Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.

Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:
1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types."
2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced."
3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %* This is for a Windows XP computer.
For Windows 2000 substitute the C:\WINDOWS\ with C:\Winnt\. For Windows 98
and Windows Millenium Edition substitute this: C:\WINDOWS\System\ for
C:\Windows\system32.

It could very well be a browser hijacker. The first time I had one, it
changed my home page and I could not download anything from Windows
Update.

I am not saying that this IS your problem......however go to the
following page at MS and see if any of the articles fit your particular
situation first and then report back with what error you are
getting.....if any.

Cheers......Heather

Maybe you wanted to view a script in notepad one time and
you didn't see the checkbox that says "Always use this program
to open this type of file" on the "Open with" dialog box.

Actually, it is better (safer) to have scripts associated with notepad
than with the scripting engine (unless you have made some other
arrangements to disable (or toggle) scripting.
