cannot disconnect properly

I use to be able to disconnect by right clicking on the 2
pc icons in the taskbar and clicking disconnect. Then all
of a sudden it decided it would not let me, BUT once in a
great while "when it wants to" it will do it. Now this is
the message it gives me when I click on it, "It is not
possible to disconnect at this time, The connection is
currently busy with a connect or disconnection operation"
What is that? I have talked to msn several hundred times,
they are no help - I have also talked to e-machines tech
support several times and they {beings you talk to
someone different everytime you call these places} always
give you something else to try and oh they "assure" you
the problem will be solved, BUT It does not solve the
problem. Now I have spent days and hours and alot of long
nights trying to stop this, as if I want to disconnect I
have to shut my whole pc down in order to do so. I'am not
coming up with anythng to get to the bottom of this. A
friend of mine suggested something about there being a
place inside my pc where I can check about redial if the
line is dropped and do you think I can find that in there
anywhere?---------no where. I'am on my last nerve with
this pc and loosing so much sleep over this irretating
thing, if anyone has any answers to help me out on this,
I would APPRECIATE it so so much. Thanks for taking the
time to help. Karen

I have an emachine but don't use MSN, so I don't know how much that
changes things. I find with my computer that the connection icon stays
in place most of the time as long as I keep the modem speed and
connection port at 57600 rather than going for 115200 (not an
attainable goal in any event). Both can be set in Device Manager -
control panel, system, hardware, device manager. Click to expand,
properties.

Try going into control panel, network connections. Right-click your
ISP name. Hopefully at the top you'll see Connect (or Disconnect if
you're on line). This can be used to stop the connection in the
absence of the systray icon. A low tech method is to unplug the phone
cord. If difficult to reach, add a short connector cord.

In the same menu, properties is at the bottom. I assume you've been
there through your many phone conversations with tech support so that
the area is checked to put an icon in the system tray.

Also look for notification area matters in Kelly's a-z (N).

Post back and tell us how you do. Good luck!
