Cannot delete old local profile from XP domain system

Doing some house cleaning and noticed several old local profiles on my XP
system and thought I'd delete them. The Delete button is greyed out in the
User Profile GUI for every profile on my system. I ran Process Explorer and
noticed that every profile's NTUSER was loaded and wouldn't allow me to close
their handles.

Can anyone suggest a clean way to rid myself of these old profiles?

If the profiles are loaded is the machine using Fast User Switching ?
If so, then you'll want to log off those users. Actually in any business
environment I'd consider disabling Fast User Switching.

Which would mean that the op isn't logged on to the domain, FUS is not
available on domains, at least not that I know of.

I wondered about Domain participation as well.

Yes, my system is a domian member. On another tip, I installed the User
Profile Hive Cleanup Service, rebooted and found that all the profiles were
now 'Delete-able' - I was able to clean out the old ones. Must have been
something bad in my profiles.
