Cannot Create New PST file nor open a new PST file

C

Chuck Ritzke

I have Office03 and XP Pro.

Suddenly I cannot create a new PST file from the New-Outlook Data File menu
item.

I get the "Out of Memory or Systems Resources" message.

I have several PST files that I have created in the past (some of which were
created on my current machine). I have tried making a copy of one of my
existing PST files, but attempts to open it give the same error.

I have...rebooted, turned antivirus off (NAV), and ran Office Detect and
Repair. Still no luck.

Any ideas? Is there a limit on how many PST files you can open at once? I
thought the size limit just applies to a single PST file or is there a limit
on the size of the total PST files I have open? I would try closing one of
my currently open PST files (I have 11) but fear I won't be able to open it
again.

TIA,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,
Is there a limit on how many PST files you can open at once? I

The limit of the maximum number of PST files is 256 or 512 ( I think it is
512), so your 11 PST files is not the reason. We have 36 PST files on our
"server".

[...]
I thought the size limit just applies to a single PST file or is there a
limit on the size of the total PST files I have open?

No, also the new unicode PST file (Outlook 2003) has no limit. A customer of
us, has a 190GB unicode PST.

What I would like to do is to create an additional profile to test if you
can add a PST file in another profile:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;829918&spid=2520&sid=1309

Don´t delete the existing profile only create a new one and start Outlook
with the new profile.

Maybe the space on your harddisk or the folder size on your harddisk is
limited?

There is no such limit that I've seen, but I've certainly never seen anyone
try to open 11 PST files at once. Hard to imagine why that would ever be
necessary. Do all these PST files reside on the same partition as Outlook?
Something is probably wrong with your installation.
Have you tried creating a new profile?
What happened just before "Suddenly?"
Closing a PST file would do nothing to prevent your opening it again.

Well, I do not know if you expected the new profile to fix it or to merely
test something. But after creating the profile, I was able to create a new
PST in the new profile AND am now able to create a PST in my original
profile.

So I do not understand why this fixed things or what was wrong exactlyu, but
I guess I won't look a gift horse... as they say.

Thanks,
Chuck

Thanks,

The new profile thing worked (see my other response). Although I still don't
know what happened before "suddenly". I had not had a reason to create a PST
for several months.

FYI - I use multiple PSTs to keep organized. In my business, I have several
clients and projects going on at once. As email comes in and goes out, I
file into separate PSTs. The reason I do this (as opposed to just the use of
folders), is that I can then easily and quickly copy the smaller PST files
onto my laptop when I need to make a road trip involving a particular client
or topic.

Being a one person shop, this is much easier for me than trying to get into
and manage, say an exchange server setup, and all the syncronization stuff
to keep my laptop and desktop in sync.

You'd still be better off using folders, not separate PST files.
Each time you add another PST connection, you multiply your chances of
corrupting your profile, which is what you did.
If you want to take them on the road with you, just copy them into a
separate PST file at that time rather than trying to maintain so many
separate connections to PST files.

Hi Chuck,

I expected the new profile to test the Outlook profile settings, if only the
installed profile is corrupted or also all new created profiles. It seems
Outlook needed only a small "kick" to remember that it is a software program
and not a coffee machine. ;-)

If an Outlook profile is corrupted you can try to fix the problem with a
"fixmapi.exe" programm, that is saved on your XP system (search only for
"fixmapi")
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228457

BUT, as long a software runs without any problems I wouldn´t change
anything, never.

[....]
But after creating the profile, I was able to create a new PST in the new
profile AND am now able to create a PST in my original profile.

Good trick, isn´t it? ;-)
Sometimes also a blind chicken finds a grain.

I hope you backup the PST files regulary. Some users find that PST files are
very unstable.
I don´t think so, because we work since 1997 with the same PST files without
any problem.
