Cannot Connect to Vista shared files via wireless network from XP

I have been unable to access my shared files from my home's XP machines to my
Vista Ultimate machine. On the Vista machine, I have enabled the guest
account, enabled all of the file sharing, enabled sharing to "everyone,"
"Guest," and anything else I could find, and made sure sharing was enabled on
the folders I wanted shared. Password protection is disabled. I am able to
access files on my XP machines AND on my Vista machine from my Vista machine,
but not the reverse. The name of the network is consistent on all of the
machines. As far as I can tell regarding the type of network on the Vista
machine, there are only "Public" and "Private" options. Mine is set to
Private as per the many directions I have read.

My router is a Netgear router using DHCP with dynamic IP addresses.

I am only using the Windows Firewall right now on all of the computers, and
I have enabled "File and Print Sharing" in the advanced properties of the
Windows Firewall.

As far as the "Win HTTP Web Proxy Autoproxy Discovery" service, when I check
in Windows Services, I see it is "running."

Thank you so much in advance for your response. I have tried everything I
have found written in these groups to no avail. I have been working on this
for days! I am beginning to regret my Vista Ultimate upgrade. I had XP (and
all of the previous operating systems back to OS2) down pat.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks!

First check to see that NetBT is consistently Enabled.

Then provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", run from each computer, so
we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Chuck,

PROBLEM RESOLVED! Thank you for all of your help and the instructions on
your website and your posting.

For those of you still struggling with this, these are the steps I took
which I believe solved my problem.

1. I installed WindowsXP-KB922120-v5-x86-ENU.exe on all of the XP computers
in my network.
2. I enabled “NetBIOS Over TCP/IP†on all of my networked computers.
3. I added the following ports as Windows Firewall exceptions:

netbios-ns 137/tcp NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udp NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-dgm 138/tcp NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm 138/udp NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-ssn 139/tcp NETBIOS Session Service
netbios-ssn 139/udp NETBIOS Session Service
microsoft-ds 445/tcp Microsoft-DS
microsoft-ds 445/udp Microsoft-DS

After I completed all of these steps and restarted everything after each
step, all computers were able to see each other!

I did not continue with the further diagnostics you described because
everything worked, but if anything goes wrong in this area at a later date, I
will definitely continue with your instructions. Your website (while quite
technical) was definitely a huge help.

Thank you so much for your time!
