cannot connect to shared folder

I'm having trouble viewing the contents of a shared folder. I have a desktop and a laptop, both running windows xp pro, through a wired linksys router.

Both computers have no problems connecting to the internet. The laptop can print to an hp printer through the desktop when the desktop computer is powered on. I can ping the desktop computer from the laptop.

Right now I can view two shared folders that are on the desktop computer. When I try to set up a new shared folder that resides on the desktop, the icon appears next to the other shared folders in the "my network places" on the laptop. But, when I click on the shared folder I get this:

"\\newcomp\mel is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the system administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

The same user is logged on to both computers. This same user has administrator rights.

I can look at the properties of all of these shared folders on the laptop. Except the number of tabs is different. \joint has 3 tabs: general, security, customize; \mel has two: general, customize

I tried moving the \mel folder on the desktop to the same \sharedfolder that the \joint folder is in. All permissions and properties appear to be the same. But, when I click on the \mel folder I get the same error: access is denied.

I'm at a loss of what to do next.

Hi, I don't think Windows XP Pro allows you to share folders on your
desktop, or within: Documents and Settings, Program Files and Windows system
folders.
So:
Create a new folder somewhere else [just have it on the c drive]
Right click, select the sharing and security option
Under sharing select share this folder on the network etc.

And then try to access that folder from your laptop..

Let me know what the result is.

Cheers,

Clive
