Cannot connect to internet and other problems

Using Windows XP initial problem was connecting to the internet. Also had
difficulty loading some software, and cannot run command prompt to test
pinging. Message appears as follows: c:\windows\system32\command.com
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and MS windows apllications.
Any ideas as to what this is and what I need to do?
